Rajma (kidney bean) curry in a server bowl

The curry here that I’m sharing is a homestyle one-pot kidney bean curry, which is mildly spicy and delicious. This hearty curry is sure to be a hit with everyone in your family! Not only is it easy to make, but the flavours will keep everyone coming back for more. Try serving this delicious kidney bean curry next time you’re looking for a flavourful meal.

Let’s see what’s Rajma?

Rajma is the Hindi word for kidney beans. There are varieties of kidney beans, and all are termed Rajma. However, this delicious vegan curry is so famous that the recipe has become synonymous with the bean. Yes, it gets the name because both the beans themselves and this dish that features them are known as Rajma.

Rajma (kidney bean) and its benefits

The star of this dish is kidney beans, which are a great source of protein, fibre, and vitamins. They are also low in fat and cholesterol, making them a great healthy choice.

In addition to the kidney beans, you can add other vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, beans, and bell peppers. Today I added potatoes to the beans, and it was so sumptuous. For even more flavour and richness, add coconut milk.

Rajma (Kidney Bean ) Varieties.

In the Indian market, there are three types of rajma available. They are red kidney beans, Kashmiri beans, and Chitra kidney beans. I used Chitra kidney beans for this recipe. This type of rajma gets its name from the Hindi word picture. The reason for this name is the subtle red lines that run across the surface of each bean.

Pro Tips To Make Rajma Curry/ Rajma Masala

  • I used a pressure cooker to cook this recipe. Just twenty minutes to finish the recipe from start to finish. Note: I used fresh kidney beans. So, the time varies for the fresh and dried kidney bean curry preparations.
  • In case using dried rajma (kidney beans), pre soak for at least eight hours. It helps the kidney bean to cook fast and soft.
  • Rinse the dried bean well and remove the grit before soaking. Also, rinse once more before cooking.
