Watermelon juice with lemon, ginger and basil seeds in a glass.

This Watermelon is a popular and refreshing fruit during summer. It is widely sold by street vendors in various forms, such as sliced, cubed, or packed in boxes.

This juice recipe is simple and can be customized to individual preferences. I enjoy experimenting with different variations of watermelon juice. Today, I’m sharing one of my all-time favourite recipes.

I love basil seeds and use them in everything from juices to puddings. Inspired by my Sweet Basil Drink (Sabja Seed Drink) recipe, I experimented with incorporating them into all my creations.

Ingredients and benefits watermelon juice with lemon and ginger

Ingredients to make watermelon juice with lemon, ginger and basil seeds.
  • Watermelon – Watermelons are high in water content, making them exceptionally hydrating. They are also packed with vitamins and minerals like vitamin C and potassium, which can help replenish electrolytes lost through sweating.
  • Lemon – Lemons are known for their refreshing and tangy flavor. They are rich in vitamin C and provide a burst of acidity to balance out the sweetness of the watermelon.
  • Ginger – Ginger adds a delightful kick to the watermelon juice. It has a cooling effect on the body and can help indigestion. Ginger also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation caused by heat.
  • Basil Seed – Basil seeds are also believed to have cooling properties and can help in maintaining body temperature during hot weather. As mentioned earlier, basil seeds have a gelatinous texture when soaked in water, which can provide a unique and enjoyable texture to the drink.
  • Simple sugar syrup
  • Pepper powder –
  • Salt

Substitutions

If you know how to make the recipe fit a certain diet, let the reader know here. Don’t fake it – only provide guidance on topics you have actual experience with.

  • Mint leaves – instead of ginger, you can use mint leaves for both flavour and digestion.
  • Simple sugar syrup. – use honey instead of sugar.
  • Vegans – use maple syrup or stevia to swap honey or sugar.
  • Basil seeds – you can swap chia seeds for basil seeds. If you don’t have any, omit and make the juice.

Variations

Feel free to experiment and customize the recipe according to your taste preferences. These variations will add a new dimension of flavours to your drink.

  • Spicy – add more of freshly ground pepper or ginger to make the juice little more spicy. You can add a pinch of chili powder to add an extra spicy kick to the juice.
  • Flavours – add basil or mint when blending the juice. This gives a beautiful variation to this juice.
  • Kid friendly – skip the pepper and ginger to get kids to drink without fuss.
  • Combo – Follow the same recipe by combining different fruit juices like apple, orange, and strawberry along with watermelon juice.

Storage Tips

If you’re hosting a gathering, you can prepare the watermelon juice ahead of time. When you’re ready to serve, add bloomed basil seeds and ice cubes to it.

I recommend avoiding freezing the juices for days. Store them in an airtight container in the fridge for a day or two is advisable.

Top tip

Always try to drink the freshly made juices the same day.
