As Valentine’s day is around the corner, I want to make a rich and deliciously decadent cake that is simple, and even a novice baker can nail it. It is a one-bowl cake recipe with regular cake ingredients available in the pantry.

The recipe I’m sharing is my favourite chocolate cake recipe. I love this cake recipe because it is simple and quick to bake. Yes, it takes only 10 to 15 minutes to prepare the cake batter. Secondly, it is perfect for layering any frosting, and finally, it is sinfully delicious, and my family loves it. So, I love to bake this cake for special occasions to make everyone happy.

How to prepare Best Chocolate Cake?
Firstly, add the instant coffee powder to hot boiling water and keep it aside. Sieve all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a bowl. Now add the caster sugar and mix until it is well combined. Then add two eggs, buttermilk, oil, coffee mixture, vanilla extract, and whisk until combined. Do not overmix the cake batter. Transfer the cake batter to a 7” round pan and bake in a preheated oven at 180* C for 30 to 35 minutes or until inserted skewer comes out clean.
Frosting
Remove from the oven and allow it to cool on a cooling rack. Let it completely cool before frosting. Layer the cake with a serrated knife. I layered one layer to limit frosting. Apply sugar solution in between layers and frost ganache. You can refrigerate for a few minutes to set or devour it immediately. Variations
Here are I’m giving variations for some ingredients which I can’t promise the taste and texture as this cake recipe.
- all-purpose flour – you can alternate with whole wheat flour or a 50:50 ratio of all-purpose flour and wheat flour.
- caster sugar– you can also use granulated sugar or cane sugar.
- buttermilk – can use milk, coconut milk, or almond milk according to your preferred diet.
- oil – I used vegetable oil ( Oil keeps the cake moist and soft texture ). You can use rice bran, canola, or any flavourless oil. If you want to use butter, use melted butter.
- Egg- The best substitute for eggs is mashed bananas, yogurt, condensed milk, and apple sauce. I haven’t tried apple sauce but tasted an egg-free cake made of apple sauce. I didn’t find any difference, and the taste was so good. Skip buttermilk when using yogurt.
- unsweetened cocoa powder – I used Hersey’s unsweetened cocoa powder. You can use Dutch-processed cocoa powder, but the taste and colour of the cake differ.
Step-by-step preparation of Best Chocolate Cake
Sieve all the dry ingredients (all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, and baking soda) in a wide bowl.
Add caster sugar to the flour mixture and mix with a wire whisk until it is well combined.
Now add in two eggs.
Next goes in buttermilk.
Then goes in hot coffee mixture.
Finally, add in vanilla extract and whisk till it is well combined. I used an electric hand beater to mix the cake batter.
Do not over mix the cake batter. Mix only for a few seconds.
Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180*C and transfer the cake batter to a well-greased and dusted cake pan.
Bake the cake for 180* C for 30 to 35 minutes, or inserted skewer comes out clean.

Let sit for 3 to 4 minutes or until the chocolate melts completely. Let the ganache cool completely before frosting the cake.
