Fried Gram/Pottukadalai Chutney is an easy lip smacking chutney variety. It is a popular South Indian chutney recipe loved by all . It goes well along with all south Indian breakfast like idli ,dosa rava dosa ,adai,vada etc.

Fried Gram /Pottukadalai Chutney

This chutney recipe is simple to prepare with few ingredients readily available in kitchen pantry. Every household in south India has their own chutney recipe . Fried Gram and coconut is the main ingredient for this recipe. Whenever ,I’m busy and want to make chutney for breakfast or dinner,this recipe comes in handy to make my job easy. Yes,it is less time consuming to prepare!

Fried Garam /Pottukadalai Chutney

Fried gram /Pottukadalai chutney recipe is quick to make. Moreover not too many ingredients needed for this recipe. It all needs only handful of ingredients to prepare this chutney. Fried gram and coconut are the main ingredients for this recipe. Adding ginger and chillies make chutney more flavourful and tasty . Moreover adding fried grams gives an unique nutty flavour to the chutney. However ,I add only little quantity of fried grams and more coconut. I also try to substitute ingredients according to my mood. Sometimes,I add garlic in place of ginger,dry chillies for green chillies , few drops of lemon in place of tamarind. If you want plain coconut chutney avoid fried grams for a tasty mild coconut chutney.Lets see how to make this sumptuous Chutney recipe!

How to make Fried Gram /Pottukadalai Chutney?

Firstly add coconut,fried gram,ginger,chillies,tamarind and salt to taste and grind coarsely. Secondly , add required quantity of water and pulse for minute and finally temper the chutney with mustard seeds,cumin,urad dal,chana dal and curry leaves. Delicious chutney is ready to serve for breakfast recipes and snacks too.

What to serve with Fried Gram /Pottukadalai Chutney?

Serve any South Indian breakfast Idli ,variety dosai like Adai/Adai Dosa Rava Dosa/Dosa Recipe ,plain dosa,pongal etc for this chutney. Snacks like Pakoras,Fritters,Bondas and Vadas is also served with this chutney.

Lets jump to the recipe with step by step preparation.

Gather all the ingredients .

Add all the ingredients altogether in an electric mixer.

Grind them into a coarse mixture. To it add ½ cup water and again pulse it for a minute or until desired consistency.

Temper the chutney with urad dal, chana dal, cumin, mustard seeds and curry leaves in a teaspoon of oil and is ready to accompany with any south Indian breakfast or snacks.

Today I served with Adai/Adai Dosa and it was delicious .

Notes

Use fresh Roasted gram .It gives beautiful nutty Flavour.

Can use either green chillies or dry chillies.

In addition to ginger ,you can add 2 cloves garlic in 1:1 ratio.

You can add more fried gram reducing the quantity of coconut or vice versa.However ,I like to add more coconut.

Add little coriander leaves when grinding chutney to get beautiful green colour.

Add chillies according to your palate taste.

Equipment

Ingredients
  

  • ¼ cup fried gram ( roasted chana dal )
  • ⅓ cup coconut
  • ½ inch ginger
  • 2 green chillies ( add as per the taste )
  • 4 pinch tamarind
  • salt ( to taste )

For Tempering

  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 1 tsp ( combination of urad dal, chanal dal, cumin seed, mustard seed )
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
