What Is Mixed Fruit Jam?

Mixed fruit jam is a delicious fruit spread made by cooking a combination of fruits with sugar and lemon juice until thick and glossy. Unlike single-fruit jams, mixed fruit jam combines different flavors to create a rich, fruity taste in every spoonful.

The best part about homemade mixed fruit jam is its flexibility. You can use whatever ripe fruits you have on hand, making it an excellent recipe for reducing food waste while creating something everyone will enjoy.

Since this recipe is made without pectin, the fruits, sugar, and lemon juice work together to naturally thicken the jam as it cooks.

Why Make Jam Without Pectin?

Many homemade jam recipes rely on commercial pectin to help the jam set quickly. While pectin works well, you don’t always need it.

In this recipe, apples naturally contain pectin, while sugar and lemon juice help the jam thicken beautifully as it cooks. The result is a soft, spreadable jam with a fresh fruit flavor that tastes much better than many store-bought varieties.

Making jam without pectin also means you can create delicious homemade preserves using simple pantry ingredients that you probably already have at home.

Ingredients You’ll Need

One of the best things about this recipe is that it uses simple fruits and pantry staples. Every ingredient plays an important role in creating a flavorful homemade mixed fruit jam.

Ingredients for homemade mixed fruit jam without pectin.

Apple

Apples naturally contain pectin, making them one of the best fruits for homemade jam. They help the jam thicken while adding a mild sweetness.

Mango

Ripe mango adds sweetness, beautiful color, and a rich tropical flavor.

Banana

Bananas make the jam wonderfully smooth and creamy while adding natural sweetness.

Orange

Fresh orange balances the sweetness with a refreshing citrus flavor.

Concord Grapes

Concord grapes add juicy sweetness and a rich fruity taste that blends beautifully with the other fruits.

Sugar

Sugar not only sweetens the jam but also helps preserve it and gives it the right consistency.

Lemon Juice

Fresh lemon juice balances the sweetness and helps the jam set naturally without using pectin.

Water

A little water helps soften the fruits as they begin cooking.

Food Coloring (Optional)

A small amount of red food coloring gives the jam a bright appearance similar to store-bought mixed fruit jam. Feel free to skip it if you prefer a more natural look.

See the recipe card below for the exact ingredient quantities and measurements.

Best Fruits for Mixed Fruit Jam

One of my favorite things about this recipe is that you don’t have to use the exact fruits every time. It is a wonderful way to use whatever ripe fruits you already have at home.

Some fruits that work well include:

  • Apples
  • Mangoes
  • Bananas
  • Grapes
  • Oranges
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries
  • Peaches
  • Nectarines
  • Pears
  • Plums

Choose ripe fruits for the best flavor, but avoid fruits that are overripe or spoiled, as they can affect both the taste and shelf life of the jam.

How to Store Mixed Fruit Jam Without Pectin

Proper storage helps keep your homemade mixed fruit jam fresh and flavorful for longer.

Allow the jam to cool slightly before transferring it to clean, sterilized glass jars. Fill the jars almost to the top, leaving very little air space, and close the lids tightly while the jam is still hot.

To help create a vacuum seal, carefully turn the filled jars upside down for a few minutes. Once completely cool, store the unopened jars in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

After opening, keep the jam refrigerated and always use a clean, dry spoon to serve it. Properly stored, the jam stays fresh for several weeks in the refrigerator.

Substitution and Variation

  • Replace grapes with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries for a delicious mixed berry jam.
  • Add peaches, nectarines, pears, or plums during their season.
  • Mix tropical fruits such as pineapple or papaya for a different flavor.
  • Add a little lemon zest along with the lemon juice for extra freshness.
  • If fresh lemon juice is unavailable, bottled lemon juice works well.
  • Food coloring is completely optional and only adds a brighter appearance.
  • I do not recommend reducing the sugar or replacing it with alternative sweeteners, as this may affect the texture, setting, and shelf life of the jam.
